Workshops

At HEAL we understand the importance of blended learning and an opportunity to combine some of our online courses with face-to-face workshops to consolidate the learning.

Interview Skills Workshop

HEAL offers a face-to-face workshop for junior doctors to practice interview skills to coincide with junior doctors applying for vocational training positions.

The aim of the workshop is to assist junior doctors to:

  • Understand the requirements of College interviews
  • Hone competency knowledge, and
  • Refine interview technique

The program follows core competencies from college vocational training programs and will provide a range of interview stations with a senior registrar or fellow to provide relevant scenarios and interview feedback. With this model, participants also have the opportunity to be directly involved in the interview stations and offer and receive feedback from their peers as well as the consultants. An online interview course accompanies the workshop which participants complete before attending the workshop.

2021 workshop dates coming soon.

Online Clinical Communications Workshop

This accredited for CPD Workshop is delivered online (by Zoom) in two x three-hour sessions that aim to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to communicate more effectively in healthcare settings. In particular, it aims to enhance the ability to use appropriate language to have the impact intended during clinical interactions.

This course will provide reflective and experiential learning opportunities to support the learner during challenging and complex communication scenarios such as discussing bad news and shared decision-making. It will also assist participants to recognise and respond appropriately to the emotions felt by others. This workshop is of particular relevance to medical practitioners from other than English speaking backgrounds.

Learning outcomes will enable participants to:

  • implement the principles which underlie the disclosure of bad news to patients and family members in the local medical context;
  • apply a simple framework for breaking bad news and engaging in difficult conversations with patients and family members;
  • use language and other skills such as silence, gaze, gesture and body language to offer empathic responses that resonate accurately with the patient's emotions and feelings; and
  • bring the patient’s ideas, concerns and expectations into the interaction to achieve a patient-centered approach to the consultation.

This workshop has a pre-reading module ’Communication in Healthcare’ which will be made available prior to the workshop. It also has a predisposing activity completed at the start of the workshop and a reinforcing activity completed at the end of the workshop.

Testimonial from our 16 March 2020 workshop:
