If you’re an International Medical Graduate (IMG) navigating the Australian Medical Council (AMC) pathway, you’ve likely realised that passing the MCQ is only half the journey. The Clinical exam brings new challenges - and lots of questions.
We heard from IMGs at different stages of their journey who shared what it takes to get through the exams and find work in Australia. Whether you’ve passed the MCQ or are still in the thick of preparation, here are key insights to help you confidently move forward.
The AMC Clinical Exam Is Back In Person - And It’s Competitive
One major update: AMC Clinical exams have returned mainly to face-to-face delivery, significantly limiting the number of available exam slots. Online exams are currently restricted to candidates already working in rural or remote areas.
What does this mean for you? If you’ve passed your MCQ but haven’t secured clinical exam dates, expect a wait. Use this time wisely by preparing, networking, and (if eligible) applying for roles that could help strengthen your case.
Should You Apply for Jobs Before or After Clinical?
This is a widespread question among IMGs; the answer is: it depends.
If you’ve only passed your MCQ:
- It is possible to get a job, but expect tougher competition.
- Some hospitals only consider applicants who have passed the Clinical exam.
- Limited registration may be available, but many roles require provisional registration (which you get after passing the Clinical exam).
If you’ve passed your Clinical:
- Your job prospects improve significantly.
- You can apply for provisional registration, making you much more attractive to employers.
Study Smarter, Not Harder: What Actually Works
Clinical exam preparation isn’t just about reviewing notes - it’s about practising like it’s the real thing.
What is the best strategy shared by IMGs? Join a study group. Study groups help you stay accountable and let you practise role plays with others preparing for the exam. Several IMGs have also said this was more helpful than a solo study, especially for clinical studies.
Many participants also recommended structured courses, like HEAL’s 12-week Clinical Preparation course, for:
- Familiarity with exam structure and expectations
- Role-play practice with feedback
- Building confidence and speed
“The course helped me focus on what I needed to study and avoid wasting time on topics that would never come up”, said a recent HEAL Clinical Course Participant.
Three Mistakes to Avoid in Your Clinical Preparation
Here are the top pitfalls shared by IMGs who’ve been through the process:
- Waiting too long to start preparing – Even if exam dates are delayed, start early.
- Focusing only on theory – The Clinical exam tests communication, clinical reasoning, and structure, not textbook knowledge.
- Not timing your practice sessions – Practice under time pressure so you don’t freeze in the real exam.
Final Advice: Treat It Like a Marathon
Success doesn’t happen overnight. As one IMG said during a HEAL webinar, “I failed my first five interviews. The sixth one got me the job. Each time I called back for feedback, I improved.”
That same persistence applies to exam prep. Even if your timeline is unpredictable, keep moving forward, whether it’s practising cases, updating your CV, or finding ways to stay clinically active.
